5 Tips for Caring for Your Christmas Tree

Every year, we buy Christmas trees and hope that this year, it will keep its needles better that it did last year. Scientist in Quebec, Canada have just discovered that the reason a tree loses its needles is because the tree produces ethanol. By essentially bathing the tree in a chemical compound they were able to double the amount of time a tree can keep its needles.

Unfortunately, the discovery is brand new so it will take some time before it will be available commercially. In the meantime, here are some tips that can help you to keep your tree beautiful as long as possible.

1. Start By Choosing a Healthy Tree

When selecting a tree, give it a good shake and see if it is already losing needles. If so, pick another one and repeat.

2. Take it Home in a Bag

Or in your car, if you can. Part of the reason a Christmas tree loses its needles is drying out. If you would just tie the tree on the roof of your car, the wind would dry it out fast. Have the vendor put it in a bag so it will stay moisturized. It would be a great pity if your beautiful Christmas tree wouldn't last, wouldn't it?

3. Cut the Trunk

This one actually depends on the amount of time it has been without water. If you take it home and water it within four hours, this isn't totally necessary, but it's a good idea nonetheless. Take a small handsaw and cut off about an inch. This is important because when the cut off end is out of the water it will secrete resin and this will prevent it from absorbing water.

4. Water it Abundantly

When you first put it in water, be prepared for it to absorb up to a gallon in the first 24 hour. Keep checking the water and make sure that the water doesn't drop below the stem. For this you will need a good stand that holds the tree up properly and has plenty of space for water.

5. Keep the Room Moisturized

Fireplaces, heating and airconditioning all cause the air in the room to become dry. This is one of the most common reasons for accelerated needle loss. Use an air moisturizer to make sure your tree doesn't dry out.

Also, Christmas lights produce heat, so you might want to consider using miniature (led) lights instead of the traditional ones.
