5 Tips for a Greener Lawn
Most homeowners want to keep their lawn looking healthy and green
. But your lawn is constantly under attack from various factors, including visitors walking or driving on it, bugs and critters, as well as pets "doing their business!" Even the seasons changing puts wear and tear on your lawn. In the summer, the blistering heat and lack of rain can dry out and turn your lawn brown, while in the spring the melting snow and ice from the winter can drown your grass in moisture. So what is the best balance for maintaining that perfectly lush, green lawn you've always wanted?
The first step is a lawn mower. This may sound pretty simple, but frequently homeowners will underestimate the importance of the lawn mower in maintaining a healthy lawn.
Why is a lawn mower so important? Not only will a high-quality mower maintain an even cut and keep your lawn from becoming an unruly disaster, but also proper mower usage can actually create a thriving, glorious lawn. Ideally, a mower works best with sharp blades, however if working with an older mower, repairs and blade replacements can be easy to come by at a local hardware repair shop. Of course, if the old mower has aged beyond its years and repairs are no longer enough to keep it going, it may be best to spring for a newer model. Some new models are available in John Deere mowers, Craftsman mowers, Kubota mowers, Cub Cadet mowers and dozens of other brands.
In addition to having a good lawn mower and mowing your lawn frequently, here are 5 additional important tips to help keep a luscious green landscape any time of the year:
1. In a drought season water your lawn lightly and every 2-3 days, preferably in the morning, to gradually set in a deep foundation of moisture. If your lawn is drought stricken, lightly water it before mowing.
2. Keep a close eye on your irrigation system if you have one in place, to ensure it is not over or under watering your lawn, according to the weather conditions.
3. For prime growth and care with your mower, raise your mower settings so that you do not trim more than 1/3 of the grass length at a timeapproximately a 3" setting. The higher setting forces grass to maintain deeply set roots.
4. Regularly sharpen your mowers blades for the clean cuts. This not only leaves a precise, clean look to your lawn, but also ensures proper growth of the grass.
5. Although some may think fertilizing is only for plants, lawns flourish with proper fertilization. Typical fertilization requires 4 applications throughout the year, which allows for quick seed germination and a rich green color.
We value our lawns because they frame our homes and set precedence for our family's living environments. These mowing and landscaping tips will ensure your lawn will be a beautiful haven for you and your loved ones for years to come.
