5 Tips of Wisdom Regarding Gym Etiquette
Knowing things not to do in a gym can help you from getting yourself in trouble or being looked down upon by fellow gym members and staff.
Here are five "don'ts" of proper gym behavior
Don't stink the gym up
You may have people like this in your gym. They stink, bad! Always be sure to wash your gym clothes, wear deodorant and wear an undershirt if you have problems with (excessive sweating). Being stinky will bother anyone that gets near you in the gym. Do the courteous thing and do not come to the gym smelling like the inside of a sweaty sneaker.
Don't yell and grunt too loudly
Sometimes when people are lifting heavy weights they have a tendency to yell and grunt. Moderate yelling and grunting during a heavy set is understandable; however, grunting and screaming at the top of your lungs while doing sets of push-ups is not. Train yourself to breathe heavily when lifting heavy weights and it will help reduce the urge to grunt and scream.
Don't throw weights around
You may not be able to set your weights down lightly if they are extremely heavy and this is fine. Set them down as lightly as possible and as close to you as possible. Throwing dumbbells and barbells on the ground can break down the weights and loosen the screws and welds that hold them together. If you lose control of your weights try to set them down as closely as possible to your bench or area to prevent them from rolling into anyone else. Lastly, do not throw weights around to get attention, this will only make you look dumb.
Don't start conversations with random people
Most people at the gym are there to workout, not to make conversation. Trying to chat everyone up about diet, lifting, etc. can be very annoying for them. If you feel that you need to start a conversation then keep it short and sweet. Don't keep the person from completing their workout.
Don't flex in the mirror
If you are a bodybuilder getting ready for a show it is acceptable to check your posing in the mirror. What is not acceptable is hogging the mirror or standing in front of others for 30 minutes at a time wondering if your 10 inch arms have grown at all. If you find it necessary to flex in the mirror do it in the bathroom or in an area where people are not around. Most of the time flexing in the mirror can hold off until you get into the comfort of your own home.
Following these tips will help you from being looked down upon and ridiculed at the gym. Gym etiquette is important to follow to help keep a friendly and safe environment.
