5 Top Tips To A Great Start In Orchid Growing
The orchid flower is a favorite among growers who want to display a beautiful plant in their garden and add a touch of elegance to the household. The orchid specie has a wide variety of types to chose from and even more when you look into hybrids.
In this helpful guide we look at a simple orchid that you can grow yourself, some great hints for planting orchids, tips on watering correctly, and getting the best from sunlight and fertilizing.
1 - Which orchid is best for me? Lets talk about the Phalaenopsis Orchid. This one is a favorite for newcomers for its ease in growing and caring. Its a beautiful orchid that has wonderful colors like pinks, yellows, and even patterned strips. When in season you can sometimes have up to 8 to 12 weeks of glorious blooms.
2- When we look at planting orchids, they prefer bark than using typical potting soil. You can use normal potting media but the orchid can suffer from low air circulation which then affects the drainage of water and can cause blockage. This is why if your growing orchids in pots you need to supply sufficient drainage.
3- Your orchids need water and depending on the specie you chose expect watering to be done once or twice a week. You may need to water more frequently in the warmer to hotter months. You can apply this to the opposite seasons, where the orchid may need less water in lower temperatures. This can be once every other week or even monthly as different species having different requirements. Some orchids can go without any watering during the winter months.
4- How important is sunlight for my orchid? We all know it is but how strong the sun is can have damaging effects on the health of your orchid. They love sunlight that isn't too strong so placing them where sun reaches them in an eastern direction is good spot for them. From sun up to sun down, sitting for about twelve hours or so. Either on a window or opening is good, and watch out for any discoloration showing on the leaves. This can indicate that they've had too much sun or the sun is too strong. They show this in tinged yellowish color on their leaves and another sign for that can be undernourishment.
5- Always go for a mild quality fertilizer for your orchid. You can fertilize once every other week depending on the type you bought and the season your in. This helps as not all fertilizer are the same. Some can be too strong and cause bad health effects on your orchid. Others can have bad ingredients so be careful when choosing. If you not sure ask someone when your out shopping for fertilizer in a garden or supply store and see what the best recommendations are.
I hope these simple tips and steps help you understand little more on orchids and how to care for them when your starting out.
