What could be more thrilling than climbing to the top of an active volcano? Volcano tourism is an increasingly popular activity for adrenaline junkies around the world. While there's always some risk, since active volcanoes are carefully monitored by scientists, climbing volcanoes is relatively safe as long as you heed all warnings and alerts and use a reputable tour operator. With that in mind, here are 5 volcanoes to climb from around the world:

Mount Vesuvius, Italy

Mount Vesuvius is famous for burying the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum in hot volcanic ash in 79 AD. Though the mountain's most recent eruption was in 1944, it is still active and considered by scientists to be among the world's most dangerous volcanoes. The mountain was made a national park in 1995. You can drive to within 200 kilometers of the summit and then walk the rest of the way to peer into the crater.

Mt. Etna

Sicily's Mount Etna is Europe's largest active volcano. Towering over the landscape, it keeps locals on their toes but is also an important site for recreation and tourism. Go with a local tour operator to hike up the mountain and visit the sites of previous eruptions. During the winter, skiing is also available on Mount Etna's slopes.

Masaya, Nicaragua

A road leads right up to the top of Masaya's smoldering crater. Additionally, you can book a night tour of the volcano from a local tour company and explore cave-like lava tubes.

Mount Bromo, Indonesia

Indonesia's imposing Mount Bromo looms over the Sea of Sand, providing tourists with some dramatic photo ops from the top, which can be reached on foot or by Jeep. If you visit during the festival of Yadnya Kasada, you can watch as locals attempt to appease the mountain gods with fruit, vegetables, flowers and livestock.

Mt. Pinatubo, Philippines

In 1991, Mt. Pinatubo literally blew its top in an eruption that was 10 times more intense than that of Mount St. Helens. Today, you can climb to the top, swim in a volcanic lake, and even give yourself a facial with mineral-rich volcanic mud.

Don't forget to apply for a passport well in advance of your trip. It takes at least 6 weeks to get your passport back if you apply with normal processing, and at least 3 weeks if you apply for expedited processing via the Department of State. For faster processing, you can make an appointment at a regional passport agency office or use a private company like RushMyPassport.
