In this article I will cover the 5 most asked questions by beginner guitar players.
These questions come from the simple fact that in the beginning, guitar intervals, just like any musical terms are some basics that are learned and understood gradually in time.
1. What are the guitar intervals ?
I saw many beginners asking me what are the guitar intervals. Usually all the beginners are more into playing than into understanding what they play, and that is the reason why many of them see the guitar fretboard as just a big collection of fret boxes, without ever being curious about what is their name.
You have to first learn the notes on the fretboard so you can be able to learn the intervals. The guitar interval is a distance between 2 notes. If you don't know the notes you don't know what intervals you play.
2 How can I learn the guitar intervals more faster ?
In order to learn you need to practice them.
First, learn their shapes and names. You don't have to do this in day , stick with it at least a week or to until you get to know them by heart. Simply devote 15-20 min each day to learning their names and shape.
Second, choose the 8 intervals that build the major scale and start doing voice leading exercises.
Third. Do voice leading exercises until you can play the major scale solely with your voice.
Fourth. Continue with the minor scale and apply the first 3 steps. Next you can choose any scale you want.
3. How do I practice guitar intervals ?
You have to make scale runs going from an intervals to a different interval. If you have C major for example. And you want to practice 3rd, the notes that you should play are: C E, D F, E G, F A, G B and so on. Choose different intervals and practice them.
4. How can guitar intervals help me when it comes to chords ?
A chord is a combination of at least 3 notes. What is the name of the distance between 2 notes? That's right guitar intervals J. Simply choose any chord you want start with the root note and see of what guitar intervals is it build from.
5. Does guitar intervals help me with my improvisation ?
Yes they do, in fact they are crucial because if you get to know them perfectly ( being able to sing them out loud with your voice) you will see that when you improvise, new ideas will come up to your mind and you will se that every idea that comes to your head is just a mix of intervals.
