6 Things To Remember Before Posting A Blog
After several months of blogging at MyMark I have learned through my mistakes
, several simple things that are commonly forgotten about when posting a blog. I wanted to share these with anyone who may benefit from my learning experiences so they don't have to go through the same painful learning process I did. Here they are:
Always use spell check! Even in WordPress it's a good idea to click on that little spell check button just in case you turned off your automatic spell checker.
Get someone else to proofread before you post! Spell check is a great tool; however, it doesn't catch those words you meant to say or when you pluralized something you meant to leave singular (eg. due vs. do, and vs. an, or its vs. it's). A second set of eyes is always beneficial when trying to catch those nasty grammar, spelling, punctuation and word choice errors. As a side note: make sure you go back through your blog post after someone else has read through it in case they changed something you meant to leave that way (eg. googol instead of Google)
Review your title! After writing your blog you may realize that the title doesn't quite fit or that you could write a more compelling headline for your fantastic post. Whatever the reason, it is always a good idea to go back and review your post title to prevent blogger's remorse.
Check hyperlinks and pictures! If you are posting a picture with your blog (which is highly recommended) make sure you preview your post to see if the pictures show up and in the correct position. You should also check your hyperlinks and make sure they all work before posting your blog. Very few people enjoy copying and pasting links into a new window or tab.
Fill in your meta information! Verify that you are posting your blog in the proper category, add meta tags and include an excerpt for your blog preview. The excerpt should be one or two sentences describing the overall thought of your blog. Your blog should only cover one thought so creating the excerpt should be simple. If your blog covers too many thoughts, break it into multiple blogs.
Bonus Step! Preview your entire post! Click the preview button before publishing your blog post. This will show exactly what your readers will see when they visit your blog. If something looks out of place or you notice any spelling or grammar errors this is an excellent last change to change it.
Anyone who has been blogging for a while will tell you that you cannot proof your post enough. Get at least two pairs of eyes on your post and get it done right the first time. I can tell you from experience how embarrassing it is to have a complete stranger pick apart your spelling, grammar and visual representation of your blog. Good luck with your blog and don't forget these tips!
