The very successful 20-day CAT 2010 test marathon has once again brought back into focus the advantages of computer based testing. More than 200,000 MBA aspirants took the test in a 20 day test window with a smooth test taking experience. The aspirants also had a smooth online registration process, which allowed them to pick up their ideal dates and their preferred venues.

The test takers have reasons to be relieved as the CAT computer based test (CBT) has been fair and maintained a uniform difficulty level throughout the test window. They are hopeful of the results coming on the announced date, which is January 12, 2011.

With the CAT going computer based, more and more aspirants are trying to be familiar with this new digital format of examination.

A more efficient system, CBT saves time for the students, provides them with the flexibility of choosing and or rescheduling the test date, ensures security and nullifies chances of leaked question papers. Each candidate gets a unique but question paper of same difficulty level. At the same time it also frees up the faculty from unnecessary administrative headaches and gives them more time to concentrate on academics.

Also, in recent years there has been tremendous growth in the number of test-takers to management institutes. This has put immense pressure on the testing system as well as faculty at management institutes. In this scenario the computer-based examinations offer many advantages. The other prestigious entrance exams, such as XAT, FMS, IIFT, can take note of the success path shown by CAT.

In this background, MBAUniverse.com raised the important question With the very successful computer based CAT 2010, should other MBA entrance exams also go digital?' in its Have Your Say' poll section from November 24 -- the day CAT 2010 ended successfully -- to December 10, 2010.

The poll witnessed responses from 115 respondents from across the country. The results are now out. The poll outcome has lot of surprises. A very high percentage of 66% respondents are in favour of computer based MBA entrance exams. Only 33% prefer the traditional paper-pencil format.

Shreya Datta, a respondent who is in favour of CBT, has commented, "I think clicking is much easier than colouring OMR sheets uniformly. But before going computerized, the test administrators must ensure that they are ready to offer a glitch-free test."

One of the respondents Ramesh Kumar, who is not in favour of CBT, has commented, "Computer based testing is a good idea, but the exam organizers should think of those test takers who come from small towns. Many of them face problem in operating computer. The computer based test will not be user friendly in this context. Paper & Pencil test is better than computer based as it needs lot of practice."
