, where are some good places that you can go to meet potential referrers to your legal practice?

1. Legal Training Events.

Perhaps surprising, but one of the best referrers to a legal practice should always be other solicitors. A lot of firms are able to generate many referrals from solicitors that do not offer the legal services that their firm offer. When attending these events you should try and meet other solicitors from nearby towns that do not compete with you. You should look to build reciprocal referral arrangements that work for you both.

2. Other Legal Events And Exhibitions.

There are many trade shows and legal events which are attended not only by solicitors, but other businesses that work with the legal trade. These are another excellent potential source of new relationships with businesses that may be able to refer to you, or to provide services that are of real benefit to your legal practice.

3. Formal Local Business Networking Arrangements.

There are many local business networking organisations. From 4Networking to local Business Link Events or the Chambers of Commerce. A quick Google search for your local town or city followed by the term "Networking" should show you a number of opportunities to network locally.

4. Clubs And Associations.

Many people believe that networking only applies in business settings, but some of the best relationships can start off as social events and later lead onto business once initial friendship is established. You should always be aware that you are always on duty and be alert for any opportunities to work with other people when at sports or social clubs.

5. Professional Associations.

This can include organisations such as the Motor Accident Solicitors Society or Association of Personal Injury Lawyers. Whilst it may not be obvious how this can help you, there are often conflict of interest cases that you need to refer on or also cases where accidents occur in a different country. Taking or referring cases to or from solicitors in England & Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland can be a very effective referral source.

6. Friends and Family.

Many solicitors seem to clam up when talking about their business to friends and family. This can be particularly so when discussing Personal Injury Claims as the term "Ambulance Chaser" can often be wheeled out. However, once you explain that you help to rebuild people's lives, often after they have suffered serious and potentially life threatening injuries, people soon begin to see the passion and commitment you have for your job. There are now many online forums and help groups with people looking for information and searching for answers. By providing genuine support to these groups you will be seen as a solicitor that is keen to help people.
