7 Steps On How To Save Your Relationship

Joshua works long hours at his job and Amanda feels neglected. She concentrates all of her energy and effort on caring for their children, but Joshua feels like she's not concerned about his needs. Do you think this relationship is in trouble? Can it be salvaged? Should it be salvaged? Here are seven steps you can take to save your relationship.

The first thing you have to do is determine if the relationship is even worth saving. Any relationship can be saved but only if both parties are willing to give it a 100% effort. When one person stops trying, the relationship is virtually over and nothing can be done to stop its demise.

People stay in relationships because it's easier or more convenient than being single. Folks stay in marriages because of the children, they say. What they don't realize is that's not enough to maintain a healthy relationship. The first step to save your relationship is an agreement from both parties that the relationship is worth salvaging.

The next step is pinpointing the exact problem or problems in your relationship. One of the things people think when trying to save a relationship is that the symptoms of the problems are actually the problems. You have to dig a little deeper to discover the root of the issue.

A good example is people thinking that their partner's affair causes them to break up. When the truth is that the affair is the consequence of a deeper issue. The root cause of the affair might have been diminished intimacy between the two parties leaving one person feeling neglected. This neglect is what predicated the affair. If this intimacy issue isn't corrected another affair could occur. If not an affair, something similar, like pornography, because the person's intimate need isn't being met and therefore the root cause is not addressed.

Dealing with the root causes, and not the symptoms, is the way to save your relationship.

After you have identified the root causes of your issues, you should begin to share your thoughts. This requires verbal communication of your feelings while you listen to your partner's concerns. If the communication is initiated from a desire to improve and maintain your relationship, both should be open to hearing the honest responses from their partner. Look into each other's eyes when you're talking. This may be tough when your partner says things that hurt you. But remember that the overall objective is to strengthen or salvage the relationship. These things must be brought out into the open so they can be dealt with. It's like taking medicine. It doesn't taste good, but the result will make you feel better.

Don't spend a great deal of time on this step. Get the problems out in the open then develop an action plan with concrete steps to solve them. If the issue is you not spending enough time together, then schedule a standard date night for every week. Date night doesn't have to be expensive or even cost any money. Take turns coming up with creative things to do on date night like walking through the park, strolling along a lake, or driving through neighborhoods and looking at the houses you'd like to be able to afford. If poor communication is your issue, commit to a 20 minute time daily when you'll talk to one another. Maybe leave the tv off in your bedroom once you've gotten in the bed. Use that pre-sleep time to talk to each other.

Lastly, you must realize that saving your relationship is not a 1 step process. It's continual. You will make forward progress then find yourself going backwards a bit. This is all a part of the process. There will be up times and down times, joy and sadness, laughter and tears. Be quick to hear and slow to speak. Don't cast blame to quickly, but apologize immediately even if you aren't the one in the wrong. Do all you can to maintain the peace in your relationship.
