Prevention (CDC), found that about 2% of the population in the U.S., roughly
4.7 million people sustain dog bites yearly. A huge percent of these bites about
83% do not result in injury, conversely about three quarters of a million people,
50% of them children seek medical attention after being bitten by a dog. Given
these numbers a list of tips for avoiding dog bites should be of considerable use.
Here are 7 tips for avoiding dog bites:
1) Children should never approach a dog , that's sleeping, eating, chewing on a bone or toy.
2) Don't startle a dog caring for her puppies , the approach my be misinterpreted as aggression .
3) Don't try and pet a dog that is behind a fence or in a car, dogs are protective of territory or space.
4) You should be leery of strange dogs and conclude you may be seen as threatening to them.
5) If attacked don't try to out run the dog, feed it your jacket, parcel or anything to put something
between you and the dog.
6) If you are knocked down or fall in front of an attacking dog , curl up in a ball covering your face
and neck and remain still and quiet, the dog should leave you alone at this point.
7) If you are approached by a stray or loose dog, don't run or scream , rather avoid eye contact with
the animal and remain very still like you are planted to the spot. Once the dog moves away you do the same.
These tips will have you on your way to getting a working knowledge as to how to avoid putting yourself
in an unwanted position with a dog you are unfamiliar with, and one that you know.
