7 Tips To Keep In Mind When Buying Your Next Car

According to a report by the BBC on 6 July 2010

, new car sales rose by 10.8 percent in June compared to the same period in 2009, a rise which greater than expected by Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

If you're planning to join the 1,200,000 people who have already purchased a new car in 2010, keep these 7 points in mind to ensure you get the best deal possible.

1. Never make an impulse buy - one of the most important points to keep in mind is to never buy the first car you see. Whilst you might think you'll never see a car as good as the first one you've seen in the first garage,, unless it's an absolute bargain (i.e., several thousands of pounds cheaper than it should be), refrain from buying it. Chances are there'll be a similar - or better - car waiting for you in another garage.

2. Always stick to your budget - before you go out looking for cars, you should make sure you know just how much money you can afford to spend on a car and once you've got this figure worked out, you need to make sure you don't exceed it.

And don't forget to take into consideration vehicle tax, insurance and fuel costs, as they can all have an effect on how much the car ends up being.

3. Carry out research beforehand - whether you're going to Mercedes-Benz dealers to purchase a brand new model or your local second hand dealership for a cheap run around, it's important that you spend as much time as possible researching the car - or cars - that you're looking for.

By doing this, you can not only get a good feel as to what's available, but you will be more aware of what the cars' real valuations are.

4. Take a test drive - everyone should take a test drive in the car that they're looking to purchase, there's no two ways about it.

When on a test drive, it's important that you try and refrain from playing with all of the technology that the car offers and focus on the car itself. By the end of the test drive, you should know how the car handles, if it suits you and whether you heard or experienced any problems whilst driving.

5. Take someone with you - you may be the most independent person alive, but by taking someone with you when buying a car, you'll find it a lot easier when making the actual purchase.

The reason behind this is that you can either play out the 'good cop, bad cop' scenario, where one wants to purchase the car but the other doesn't, making the salesperson work harder or you can both just appear quiet and shy or forthcoming and positive, both of which will generally help you gain a greater reduction in price from the salesperson.

6. Haggle, haggle, haggle - whether you love getting a bargain by beating the price down or not, it's imperative that you haggle when buying a car and no matter if you just come out and ask for a thousand pounds to be knocked off the price or you decide to ask for some extras to be thrown in, never settle for the price that's being displayed on the car.

7. Don't be afraid to walk away - when it gets down to it, a car is a car. There will have been hundreds of cars suitable for you before you started looking and there'll be hundreds available once you've finished, so don't be afraid to walk away if you're not entirely sure of your purchase.
