9 Foot Dish to 2 Foot Dish to No Dish - Satellite TV

The 9 foot Dish: I remember when to have satellite TV, you needed a giant dish that made it look like you were a part of the space program and a special receiver. Starting prices were around $1500 to $2000 to get the equipment and have it installed. Then, you could get a lot of channels for free, but most of the "good channels" required some sort of subscription. The trouble is you would have to switch satellites to get decent programs. If your "actuator" (the gizmo that moved the dish) broke, you were out of luck. One of those cost around $150.

The 2 Foot Dish: Then, the little dish came along, easier to get installed, but now you have to pay to get anything. Even if you only watch commercial TV on it, you still need to pay and the subscriptions were long term. The other problem was there were no local channels. Basic subscriptions were around $50 to $75 a month after the $300-$400 installation fee. Sometimes you have multiple subscriptions, even though you have one immovable dish.

All-in-one: Now you have Direct TV, Dish Network and possibly a couple more. They now offer all-in-one deals that include local TV, and movie channels, ESPN, NFL Network, yadda, yadda. Hundreds of channels are available. The subscription prices vary depending on what you get. Most people pay on average $70-75 a month depending on which survey you quote. Often the companies install free equipment.

The "Magic Jack" of TV: By now, most people have heard of Magic Jack. It is a device you buy and some software where you use the internet for your phone service. There is a one time, or small annual fee for magic jack. All of the rest of you calls are free. There are now programs available that allow you to do the same thing with satellite TV on the internet. All you have to do is buy a program and install it on your computer and have internet access. There are no subscription fees.

From 100's to over 3500 channels: Instead of the hundreds of satellite channels you now have available on Direct TV, you can access thousands of channels. The reason is because you are accessing satellite TV from all over the world. Not just in your region.

Most of us will not have a reason to watch, or even be able to watch thousands of channels, but maybe there is a channel in Africa or Australia that you would really like that is unavailable to you right now. On the other hand, instead of paying nearly $900 to watch TV, you could spend only about $50 only once, and have more channels.

The No Foot Dish: The movement is growing exponentially. Right now, hundreds of people a day are choosing to save money and are spending less for entertainment. 6 months ago it was only a couple of people a day. No telling how many people will be going to use internet television instead of satellite TV. If you are serious about lowering your debt or saving more money, you need to look everywhere, including daily entertainment.
