1. A stop sign means stop - although we get taught about them in our driving lessons and know what they look like, we don't have many stop signs in the UK, with most non-traffic light junctions featuring give way signs.

In America, when you come to a stop sign it's imperative you stop and don't treat it just like a give way, even if there are no cars coming.

2. Speeding is strictly enforced - unless you're travelling on a highway, when the rule of the road is just like in the UK and is to keep up with the flow of the traffic without speeding excessively, make sure you stick to the speed limit, as the Police are extremely strict on enforcing speeding laws.

3. You can turn right at a red light - if you're at a junction, and want to turn right but the red traffic light is on, unless it says otherwise - and it's safe to do so - you can make the right turn.

4. Undertaking is allowed - when you're driving along a highway and traffic is heavy, it's generally accepted that you're allowed to undertake as well as overtake cars.

Keep in mind that although it's legal irrelevant of the traffic levels, it's frowned upon if you undertake when it's just as easy to overtake.

5. A school bus means stop - if you see a school bus in front of you, no matter which side of the road it's on and it's lights are flashing, you have to come to a complete stop. Remaining like this until the bus moves away, do not try to overtake it even at a slow speed.

6. You need your lights on in the rain - this rule varies from state to state, but if you get into the habit of putting your lights on in heavy rain, you can ensure that you won't face any problems wherever you are in the country.

7. Put your alcohol in the boot - buying a pack of beer or a few bottles of wine to take back to your hotel? That's fine (assuming you're over 21), but make sure they're in the boot, as it's illegal in most states to carry alcohol in the cabin of the car.

8. Seat belts are a must - no matter what you've seen in the movies, in the vast majority of American states, the driver and all passengers need to be wearing a seat belt whenever the car is in motion.

9. Always stay in your car if pulled over by the Police - when pulled over by Police in the UK, you will generally get out of your car and sit in the Police car. The rule is completely different in America and if you're pulled over, turn off your engine, wind down your window and put your hands on the steering wheel until the Police Officer tells you what to do next.
