A Brief History Of Sai Baba Temple At Shirdi

Sai Baba temple at Shirdi is the most popular religious place in Maharashtra visited by thousands of people from many corners of the world

. Shirdi, near Nasik can also be visited from Mumbai and Pune. The small village of Shirdi has transformed into a divine place because of the presence of the great saint Shri Sai Baba. This temple at Shirdi is managed by the Shirdi Sai Sansthan trust appointed to look after routine working of the temple.

Shri Sai Baba arrived in Shirdi, Ahmednagar district, at the early age of sixteen years and resided their till the end of his life. His first shelter was in Khandoba mandir. The temple premises are spread across around two hundred sq meters. These premises were renovated in the year 1998-99 and are equipped with facilities for devotees who come here for Sai Babas blessings. The Khandoba temple in the complex has more importance, because this was the first place where Baba resided after entering Shirdi. In those days the temple was in center of a burial ground without any doors. A large banyan tree at the entrance of the temple indicates the place where the bullock cart of Sai halted. In its remembrance a small shrine is erected here.

Another important place in the complex is Gurusthan which is the place where the tomb of Sais Guru is located and is near Neem tree. Below the Neem tree there is an underground tunnel that leads to the place of Dwarkamai. The present shrine housing the tomb was originally a large private house called Wada. Gopalrao Booty, the person who built this shrine was a rich devotee from Nagpur. He was inspired by Baba and he dreamt of Sai Baba requesting him to build a house and temple in Shirdi. Sai told Booty Let there be a Wada with a temple, so that I can satisfy the desires of all. Booty and his friend Shama made some rough sketches and showed them to Dixit to get his approval. Dixit took the two to Sai Baba and Baba responded with warm blessings. The Wada was originally planned as a rest house and Mandir.

The construction work started in 1915 and the stone structure was completed under the supervision of Shama. With Babas permission a Lord Krishna temple was constructed on the ground floor. By the time Babas health started worsening and on 15th October 1918 his body started fading when he told his disciples I am not feeling well in the Masjid, carry me to Dagadi Wada. Instantly Baba was carried to the Wada but he took his last breathe their and was buried in the place where the image of Lord Krishna was supposed to be placed. The burial was completed by Thursday early morning; a photograph of Sai Baba was placed on a throne on the platform of the tomb. Then in 1954 the statue was installed. The Mandir which exists now is about twice the size of the original building, later it was extended from stone arches. The Museum in the complex displays things associated with Sai Babas life. This is the brief history of Shri Sai Babas life and how the temple in Shirdi came into existence.
