A Brief History Of The Dodge Challenger
Of the muscle cars ever produced, the Dodge Challenger was one of the most popular among fans
. The Dodge name is a department of the auto producing giant Chrysler and their success continues to blossom even many years after the first Dodge cars hit the streets.
The Dodge Challenger has so far been though three generations those aptly being the first, second and 3rd generations. The first vehicle came on sale way back in 1970 and with the newest 3rd generation version they remain selling strongly even now.
In The Beginning, 1970 to 1974,First Generation
Many folks pondered which vehicles the Dodge Challenger would compete against. Immediately after the specifications and design of the Challenger were released, it soon became obvious that the likes of the Ford Mustang and the Camaro were to have a huge battle to deal with. The advantage they had though; these muscle cars were already extremely well known.
There were a few things that became very clear when consumers began looking into the fine details of the Dodge Challenger. For starters it consisted of a long wheelbase and was extremely luxurious when compared to many of the other muscle cars. Effectively, it was the luxurious muscle car of a new era, and every driver wanted one.
The design had big differences when compared to the other muscle cars as well. The design was headed up by Carl Cameron, who already had experience designing the Charger in 1966.
The luxuries that Dodge included, alongside some excellent branding worked great for the company. By the end of 1974, the company had shifted over 165000 Dodge Challengers.
Continued Success, 1978 to 1983,2nd Generation
With the massive success Dodge had with the original Challenger, it was only natural that there had to be further successes to come. This eventually came in 1978 with the 2nd generation Dodge Challenger, adding to its ever growing history.
The main element that was clear here was that the new Dodge Challenger was essentially no different to the Plymouth Sapporo. That being said, Dodge made certain they produced this car their own way by updating the inside and exterior styling to distinguish it somewhat as more luxurious and make sure that it conveyed a sportier look in comparison.
Another thing to take note of was the engine set up. Rather than a large block, they used a 2.6L 4 cylinder engine that while tiny, gifted the vehicle a respectable level of performance.
The Second Rebirth, 2008, Third Generation
It was unlikely that Chrysler was going to let their Challenger gradually erode its dedicated fan base. With that in mind 2007 saw Chrysler take deposits for the upcoming third generation Challenger. A range of models were to be built, not the least of which was a SRT8 that had included a high performance 6.1l power plant.
With the new Challenger, the Challenger name lives on, and followers of the vehicle across the world now have the chance to own modern classic.
