A Brief History of Trousers

Trousers refer to an article of clothing typically covering the area from the waist to the ankle, although variants do exist. First entering recorded history in the 6th Century B.C., they are believed to have originated with the ancient Persian people, as this style of garment was ideally suited for horseback riding.

In ancient times, trousers were worn by both sexes, but during the 18th and 19th century, the wearing of trousers by women was looked upon unfavorably in the western world. This has changed, since they are now worn by both sexes. Also known as pants, breeches, or slacks, modern usage of the term generally applies to tailored garments, although for the most part the terms are interchangeable. A variety of historical events, including the French Revolution of 1789-1799 led to the trouser being seen in the current form.

The modern trouser incorporates three standard design elements: pleats, cuffs, and fly. Pleats are the folds just beneath the waistband, and may differ greatly in length and number, as evidenced by the variety of suit pants and khakis. Pleats may open towards the pocket or the zipper, the former being known as "reverse pleats" and the latter being known as "open pleats." Typically, however, standard designs include one, two, or three pleats. The cuffs refer to the rolled up fabric at the end of each leg, generally hemmed. This prevents fraying of the fabric and adds weight to the bottom of each leg, thereby allowing the trouser to drape properly. The fly describes the fabric covering used to disguise any place where the fabric is joined by buttons, or more commonly a zipper. This is the most recent development in the basic design, as early breeches and like garments generally disguised the fly region with a codpiece or something similar.

Interestingly, social stigma in the western world against women wearing trousers was lessened by the Second World War. With many women taking on factory jobs, (as well as fabric being tightly rationed) women often borrowed their husbands work clothing. After the war ended, many women appreciated the design simplicity and pragmatic appeal of wearing trousers, and the fashion took root.
