Horoscopes are usually related to the field of astrology

. The term actually refers to the diagram or chart that displays the comparative positions of several heavenly bodies such as the planets, moon and Sun at the moment of a specific event. Commonly, such a chart is prepared or cast for the second of birth of an individual. It might be the birth of a company or a relationship as well.

The heavenly bodies that are most commonly used in a chart are the Sun, the Moon and five other planets in the solar system including Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus. These five are those that were visible to the naked eye. The position of these seven lights are related to position of twelve constellations, known as the zodiac. Modern Western astrology has added Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Ceres and other bodies, while Chinese astrology has retained the original seven planets.

The houses of the zodiac are named after major constellations and their position in the arch of the heavens. There is a range of days assigned to each sign or constellation. Beginning with the first house in March, the twelve constellations are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Each sector of the sky or chart has certain qualities and characteristics assigned to it.

An individualized chart can be very complex. Computers are often used now to do the calculations necessary to do a precise chart. The components that must be addressed include the time and location of the birth. The philosophy of astrology is that the positions of the heavenly bodies affect the character and personality of the individual. Some astrologers base the calculations upon the moment of conception rather than the moment of birth.

Traditional attitudes are applied to the each person based on birth aspects. The way these characteristics interact forms the personality and tendencies in each person. These ways of approaching life will affect how an individual responds to a given event. They will tend to forecast what the major path that this individuals life will take. This part of astrology may be the most difficult for those who do not believe in the concept to accept.

Horoscopes tend to be popular and perhaps even growing in popularity, in spite of disputes about the validity. Charts are more and more complex as more factors are introduced. At the same time, general charts are available to people at a lower cost, thanks to the use of computers.
