A Chorus Line Tickets - Raising Funds For Actors

A Chorus Line's Canada production raised $54,000 in donations going toward the Actor's

Fund of Canada and Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS during a recent stop in the country. The U.S. national tour company let the two charities know that they would be splitting the money raised and collected by cast members during the Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Vancouver performances, as the performance coincided with the Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS annual fall special, reports Broadway World.

The fundraising happens for six weeks during the shows' on and Off-Broadway performances in an attempt to compete for the most money raised. "With their shows in Toronto in November 2008 and their recent Canadian tour, this outstanding company has raised a total of $17,000 for our two charities," Actors' Fund of Canada Executive Director David Hope said. "We are very grateful for their support, which is helping us to meet the high level of demand for emergency financial aid that we have experienced in recent months and which we expect to continue through the winter."

A Chorus Line began its first workshop in 1974 and started its Off-Broadway run in May 1975. After just 101 performances Off-Broadway the show was moved to Broadway's Shubert Theater, where it eventually picked up nine Tony Awards from its 12 nominations, as well as a Pulitzer Prize. In May 1976 the national company tour of A Chorus Line opened in San Francisco, as well as the international one in Toronto. By 1983 the company earned itself the title of longest running show in Broadway, surpassing Grease with 3,389 performances. Only seven years later the final performance (6,137 shows) of the original Broadway show marked the end of an era.

A Chorus Line saw its first revival in 2005, when John Breglio announced his initial plans to open one of the best shows on Broadway. Originally opening at The Curran Theater in San Francisco later that year, the preview for the Broadway production opened in September 2006 at the Schoenfeld Theater. That same year it earned two Tony Award nominations including Best Musical Revival while also opening another national tour that began at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. In August 2006 the official Broadway revival closed after 759 regular performances.

The most recent A Chorus Line cast included Mario Lopez, Nick Adams, Tommy Berklund, Mike Cannon, Natalie Cortez, Dena Digiacinto, Jenifer Foote and more. The design team for the 2006 production included Robin Wagner (sets), Theoni V. Aldredge (costumes), Natasha Katz and Tharon Musser (lighting) and Acme Sound Partners (sound).

The story was reevaluated by Bob Avian and Baayork Lee and had a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. The show is still in touring productions around the world, with specials and newly adapted features that keep the story relevant.
