Even though the use of this devise is widely popular in the field of physics, it is also utilized in other fields of science including chemistry, molecular biology and biochemistry. A spectrophotometer comes in two different designs, there is a single beam and the other one is a double beam. The single beam works by measuring the relative light intensity of the subject matter before and after it is inserted.

The double beam NIR spectrophotometer, on the other hand, is used to compare two different light paths. The first light path will be the reference sample while the second light path will be the test sample. There is no doubt that the double beam spectrophotometer is better at comparing light beams. However, the single beam is still utilized due to its larger dynamic range.

In order to use the NIR spectrophotometer, you first have to insert the subject matter inside the instrument. A light source should shine at the monochromator for it to work. There is a particular wavelength of light that is beamed at the sample. This light will then be absorbed by the sample. Now, behind the sample, there is a photodetector that is placed there to respond to the light stimulus. This will give you a reading of analog electronic current. The current is then converted into a format that can be analyzed. The numbers produced by the data will be visible in the computer.

The spectrophotometer is a type of NIR instruments that is further categorized into two types, the IR spectrophotometer and the UV VIS NIR spectrophotometer. The latter is the one more commonly used in industries such as textile, ink manufacturing and printing companies.
