A Conversation with California State Senator Leland Yee--candidate for Mayor of San Francisco
California State Senator Leland Yee is running for the position of Mayor in the the city of San Francisco. We met Thursday morning at his campaign headquarters on Van Ness Avenue, in the anchor city by the bay, to discuss the recent issues of the Union busting tactics by Governor Scott Walker in the state of Wisconsin; the impact and cultural practice of Shark Finning celebrated by some in the Chinese community; addressed the appropriateness, specifically, of Rush Limbaugh's mocking-verbal gestures of President Hu Jintao of the People's Republic of China during a state visit to America; we examined the general breakdown in civility in society and how it has translated over to our political discourse witnessed by the recent boorish behavior of our political representatives; the seriousness of Racist and threatening faxes sent to his office was also explored along with President Obama's recent reversal on D.O.M.A. (the Defense of Marriage Act); our conversation culminating with the Senator's run for San Franicsco Mayor and what America means to him.

The Senator has recently received the endorsement from CNA (California Nursing Association), which has over 5,000 members in San Francisco, which follows major endorsements in the last few weeks from the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and the Communication Workers of America Local 9410.
Attempting to break out from a crowded field of notables, such as, the current President of the board of supervisors David Chiu, City Attorney Dennis Herrera, former suspervisors Bevan Duffy and Tony Hall, perennial candidate and former board of supervisor member and the granddaughter of former Mayor Joseph Alioto--Michaela Alioto-Pier, City Assessor Phil Ting and venture capitalist Joanna Rees. Senator Yee has a formidable campaign ahead of him, pitting him against two other Chinese Americans, which will end in an election this November. The current interim Mayor, Ed Lee, also a Chinese American, was appointed by the board of supervisors to fullfill the remaining term of the newly elected Lieutenant Governor of California and erstwhile San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
The race will be decided by ranked-choice voting a new system to the bay area. Across the bay in Oakland the new, if not unexpected, Mayor Jean Quan, also a Chinese American, won by ranked-choice voting. Rank-choice voting was implemented to save money by eliminating an expensive run-off. So, the popular choice in a three-way race, as in the city of Oakland election, isn't guaranteed a win. Google rank-choice voting for a more in-depth explanation.
