A Detailed Guide For Removing Window Tint From Your Suv

We all know that window film can really improve the look and styling of your vehicle

but their maybe a time at time some point in the future that you may want to remove the window film. The reasons for removal can be many, maybe the SUV is a contact hire or long term lease vehicle and the lease company would require the film to be removed proir to handing the vehicle back to them.

So, we now need to look at a few options for removing the window film and I will talk you through the heatgun method now. Start with the more simple windows, the door windows are a good place to start, you can drop the window down a little and expose the top edge of the window, this will be your starting point.

To effectively remove the film we need some heat, this can come from a heatgun but you must follow the rules if you want to avoid any damage. Using a heatgun, you will need to carefully heat the glass on the outside, be carful near the window rubbers or any plastic trim as you can melt or distort them. Keep the heatgun moving over the glass, if you get the glass too hot the film will blister, at this point you have gone way too far. The idea is to warm the film enough so the ahesive will become a little softer and with a bit of luck help you peel the film from the glass.

Start by using your finger nail to try and start the fim peeling at the top edge, take your time and peel gently, if the film jumps then you are pulling too hard, this is when the film will leave adhesive on the glass, if this is the case you may have a devil of a job to remove it. Keep the pressure on the film uniform as you pull gently away from the glass and take your time.

With a bit of luck your film will have removed easily, if not here's what to do. You can use some solvent products to soften the glue remaining on the glass, there are a variety of glue removal products on the market but be prepared that some films have a very very aggresive ashesive and it will take some single edged stainless steel razor blades and some elbow grease to get all that glue of the glass. Spray the window with your chosen adhesive remover and allow to soak for a few minutes, with a clean single edged razor blade use overlapping strokes to scrape the adhesive from the glass, make sure you pay attention to the orientation of the blade, they will normally have some sort of marking on them, I always try and keep that mark facing me, this is so I dont turn the blade around by accident as this can cause some scratching off the glass.

Once you notice the blade is not working as effectively as it once was its time to change it, keeping the blades fresh will result in a better removal of the adhesive. You may be unlucky and have to do this method for all windows, but dont use the blade on any window with heater lines or any form of antenna built into the glass as you will wreck the lines and that will cost you big bucks to replace.

I have included a video on the alternative steam removal method and how it's a bit more effective and can be used on windows with heater elements.
