A Detailed Guide to Rome Georgia

Rome is the largest city of the Floyd County in Georgia, one of the US states. It is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and consists of all the Floyd County. It has a population of 34,980 according to the 2000 census. The city has a total area of 77.3 kilometers squared out of which 76.1 kilometers squared is land while the remaining 1.2 kilometers squared is water, so, technically about 1.54% of the total area consists of water.

In 1834, the city of Rome was founded by Colonel Daniel R. Mitchell, Colonel Zachariah Hargrove, Major Philip Hemphill, Colonel William Smith and Mr. John Lumpkin who determined the name to be given to the new city being constructed by holding a drawing. Everyone submitted their own choice and Colonel Mitchell submitted the word "Rome" as his choice with reference to the hills and areas that ran the country landscape. This suggestion was selected for approval and in 1835, The Georgian Legislature made Rome an official city and the county seat was moved from the city of Livingston to this new city.

The name "Rome" is taken from the Italian city of Rome. Rome, Georgia has been built atop seven hills with a river running between them all, again inspired from Rome, Italy. Additionally, there is a statue of Romulus, Remus and a nursing mother wolf planted in the city, a reminder of the father of Rome, which was given as a gift by Benito Mussolini, Italian leader.

The seven hills on which Rome has been built are named Blossom Hill, Jackson Hill, Lumpkin Hill, Mount Aventine Hill, Myrtle Hill, Shorter Hill (now known as Old Shorter Hill), and Neely Hill (also known as Tower Hill and Clock Tower Hill).

Rome is considered as a regional center for medical care and education due to its developmental infrastructure and the educated lot residing therein.
