A Diabetes Diet Plan And Menu

A carefully planned diabetic diet is the best way to take control of a diabetic situation

. Keep in mind that diabetes is a condition of the body, and not a contracted disease that can be cured with medication. With diabetes, the body produces less amount of insulin and the sugar levels in the blood shoot up. Therefore the primary remedy is to make sure that the diet of the body is controlled. This is to prevent the sugar levels from shooting up. Remember that this is also to make the body compensate for the lack of insulin. With time and a controlled diabetes diet plan, the effects of diabetes on the body can be properly managed.

Over the years, diabetes diet plan has consisted of total absence of sugar. This has been recommended for years now. This is not the best practice. With the lack of intake of sugar and carbohydrates, most diabetic patients end up in coronary wards. This is because the body is prevented from getting the essential dose of carbohydrates that is required for a proper functioning of the body. More recent research has been done on the diabetes diet plan and carbohydrates with the GI index have been introduced.

The GI index of a diabetes diet plan is all about the type of carbohydrates that is taken in by the body. There are certain types of carbohydrates that are rapidly broken down by the body. These give rise to the sugar levels in the body and alleviate the conditions of diabetes. However there are equally some types of carbohydrates with lower GI index that is good for consumption. These carbohydrates types do not instantly break up in the body for easy assimilation. They need considerable time to be consumed by the body and these therefore do not raise the sugar levels of the body. These can therefore be included in the diabetes diet plan.

There are many of food sources available with low GI index value and these are always included in the diet of a diabetic for better management of the situation. Examples of such food items are yogurt and condensed milk. Fruits like pears, apples and oranges are recommended. Vegetables like sweet potato and sweet corn are also recommended. Whole grain breads and other breads such as linseed and fruit loaf should be part of the diet plan. If consumed in appropriate amounts, these can compensate for the lack of carbohydrates by the body.
