Paris started life as the Celto-Roman settlement of Lutetia on the le de la Cit
, the island in the Seine, which is currently occupied by the Cathdral de Ntre Dame. Its' current name originates from the dominant Gallo-Celtic tribe in the surrounding region, the Parisii. That is what the Romans called them when they arrived in 52 BCE and established their city Lutetia on the left bank of the Seine, which is now called the "Latin Quarter".
