A Dozen Private Lender Luncheon Presentation Tips: Alan Cowgill
When I thought about writing this article, I thought it is so basic that no one would be interested but then I thought about when I was getting started and realized that even though it is old hat to me, it might be vital to others...
So, here are 12 easy tips to consider when planning and making your luncheon or dinner presentation.
1. The first step is, of course, to practice your material so you know it thoroughly and can comfortably answer questions from your guests.
2. Dress professionally. This is a business presentation, so dress like a confident, successful businessperson at an important meeting. Gain credibility by looking the part of the successful businessperson that you are.
3. Arrive early. Arrive in enough time to inspect the room and the equipment and make any necessary adjustments so that when guests arrive you are ready for them. You will appear very organized and professional. And they will feel welcome.
4. Lighting. If you are making the PowerPoint Presentation included with Private Lending Made Easy program, make the room just dark enough to make the screen clear. You want to be able to have enough light to make eye contact and interact with your guests. As you speak, look directly from one person to another. Talk to your audience, not the screen.
5. Name tags. Wear a name tag with your first name in bold letters. Have your staff members wear name tags as well. As your guests arrive, hand them a name tag and marker and ask them to write their name and please wear the name tag. Ask you talk with people; use their name to make them feel welcome.
6. Talkers. You might have someone in the audience who seems to have an uncontrollable need to make lots of comments, which takes you off track from the presentation. If you have a "talker" and the comments are relevant, allow them a few minutes then get back on track. If the comments are irrelevant, politely interrupt and ask if they could please wait until after the presentation and you would be happy to talk to them then. Stay friendly and stay in control. That gabby individual may turn out to be one of your greatest advertisers!
7. Special accommodations. Some people may need special accommodations like needing to be close to the front to see and hear better. Someone may need wheelchair accommodations. Be sure you are ready to accommodate various situations. Be sure to ask, "Can everyone see the screen?" and "Can you hear me clearly?" Be aware of room arrangement and be prepared to graciously assist with whatever they need. Be nice to these folks. They are here to help you get rich!
8. Pointer. If you use a pointer, put it down after you have used it. Nervous speakers tend to play with them absent mindedly, which is distracting. Be careful of hand gestures as well. Remember that finger-pointing at your guests can feel like scolding and can send a negative message. Be in control of your "body language" to keep the atmosphere positive and warm.
9. Personal space. Many people have a comfort zone around themselves that they designate as public space or private space. Be sure to not stand so close to someone that you are in his or her private space. You'll know if you are standing too close by their reaction to you. Are they backing away?
Make them more comfortable by allowing them a bit more room.
10. Water. Place a glass of water and a napkin near the front of the room so you can have a quick drink if needed. Place it away from your slide presentation.
11. Relax. Nobody is perfect and your guests understand that. It is more important that they see your sincerity. If there is a question you can't answer, tell them you will find out and let them know. (Then be sure to follow up, of course!) If something odd happens, be light-hearted and laugh with the audience about it. Things happen!
Note: Needing to get back with them with the
information is a great way to schedule a follow-up
meeting. Love questions! That means they are interested
and they are really thinking about what you are saying!
12. Rehab. We know what this means, we work with real estate. However, your guests might not have a clue. They may think you have just gotten out of some kind of rehabilitation! Don't assume they understand terms like rehab, flip, Junker, etc.
Ok, that was 12 but how about a bonus tip? I've got another good one.
- Be excited. Show how excited you are about your program by being enthusiastic and doing whatever you can to make it a great experience for everyone. Shake hands, smile, and connect with all these kind people who have come to see you.
Now, go make lots of money!
