A Fresh Start For Mad Men In Venuszine Music Magazine
Season four kicks off and wastes no time getting freaky.
Starting last night, Sunday, July 25, phone calls during the 10/9 central hour have been banned across the country as AMC s Mad Men, in all of its gloriously costumed glory, returned for its fourth season.
When we last left Draper and company, we knew many changes were on the horizon. The season premiere picks up about a year later, with the new ad agency up and off the ground. What would be a fresh start for the characters, however, was quickly spoiled. Don drops the ball when a journalist attempts to profile him, leaving the fledgling agency in a negative light. Betty learns that having a husband with a family makes holiday dinners a little harder to digest.
For big time fans, the new season is already looking a little like the Twilight Zone. Gone is the familiar Sterling Cooper office with rows of bouffanted secretaries. Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce is now situated in sleek (and evidently over-priced, which we re sure to hear more about that later) new digs. Betty, on the other hand, is sharing the former Draper residence with her new beau Henry and it's slightly unsettling to see her share a bed with another man when, just last season, Don was leaving her sweet little mementos from their trip to Rome. (Okay, so he might have called her a whore near that bed, too, but it's hard not to get a little nostalgic).
But let s not gloss over the one scene that warrants the most discussion: Don getting it on with a prostitute S&M style on Thanksgiving Day. Sure, we ve seen him bed a whole lot of ladies in the first three short seasons, but this one was a jaw-dropper. Having turned down Thanksgiving dinner with his new potential lady-friend for other plans, no one could have this one coming (no pun intended). This from the man who sent Betty to all that therapy with this brewing in him all the while. That said, it was disturbingly entertaining and will hopefully be confronted soon.
Once again, Sally was demonstrating her raging first-child syndrome, while Bobby was the delightful comic relief. It was easy to see where she gets it from with Don Sassy-Pants Draper around during this episode. Don threw a Sally-worthy tantrum with some clients and even got a little catty with Henry. This being just the beginning, one can only guess what kind of trouble Don s new attitude is going to get him into this season.
