A Functional Explanation Of Contact Lenses

The whole process of vision correction by contact lenses is complex

. While most people know contact lenses can be used to correct common vision problems, very few have detailed knowledge of how they actually work. In fact, before functioning vision correction, contact lenses must be able to sit stably on the eye.

It is commonly known that there are mainly two types of contacts, namely soft contacts and RGP ones. A soft lens folds gently over the rounded cornea because it is made of flexible materials. Slightly different, a hard lens does not sit as close to the cornea as a soft lens. Successfully seated over the cornea, contact lenses also require a wearer to properly blink the eye in order to adjust the lenses into a right place. In addition, natural tears and blinking also protect contact lenses against dust and particles. Properly fitted lenses will sit comfortably on the cornea all day long.

Different types of contact lenses have different functions. Contacts for nearsightedness and farsightedness only compromise vision problems, rather than correct them or improve eyesight. In detail, a contact lens for myopic is thinner in the middle and thicker on the outer edges. In the contrary, a farsighted individual needs to wear contact lenses that are thicker in the middle and thinner on the outer edges. This difference in shape is reasonable, because myopia and hyperopia are associated with different eye shapes.

When it comes to contact lenses for astigmatism, vision improvement is possible. Specially designed toric contact lenses have two prescriptions that align perfectly each time. A toric lens is a little heavier at the bottom. Over time, toric contact lenses can gradually correct the abnormal shape of the cornea. In this way, true vision correction can be achieved.

Any type of contact lenses should be based on a prior evaluation of the patients eyes by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Corrective contact lenses must offer precise correction power, which is determined by a lens prescription from the doctor.
