It can be said that the history of Peterborough uk started during the times when this city was the settlement for the Saxons. Before it is named Peterborough, the village that was built by the Saxons was named as Medehamstede, which literally means meadow homestead. On 655, an abbey was built but was abandoned on the year 870 due to the Danes and their plundering. Later on, a new abbey was built in the city, and a wall surrounding the city was made to protect the people for other attacks from the Danes. From the name Medehamstede, it was changed to St. Peters Burgh because of its fortified settlement. The city became a small town, prospering and even managed to have its own market. And yet, the Danes and Saxons attempted to overrule William the Conqueror and caused the burning of Peterborough in 1070.

During the middle ages, Peterborough became a small yet unimportant city that was controlled by the abbots. Fire attacked the city again, but just like before, the city got by and began to recuperate again. eper hospital was built on the 12th century, and on 1300,

Plagues attacked many different cities, including Peterborough, which resulted to many deaths of the people.

The coming of the 18th century marked the development of the population and establishments in Peterborough. The Napoleonic wars brought forth greater demands of the town's products, thus, making the town flourish. Then, comes the establishment of the first theatre, together with the Custom House and the foundation of the Improvement Commissioners of the Parliament.

The 19th century became a very important part in the history of Peterborough because of more developments of the city. The population prospered, introducing more establishments in the area.
