A Gre Study Guru Reveals Secret Test Trap You've Fallen For
As a self-professed GRE study guru, I like to think that I know a test trap when I see one.
And most importantly, I like passing my findings off to future graduate students who might otherwise fall for these sneaky little tricks!
From clues contained within the very question to one-word changes in the test directions, if I consider it to have potential to be a test score minefield, then you better believe that I'll develop techniques to work around it. My fellow test prep tutors often call me the "GRE test detective" - maybe that's why my classes are among the first to fill up when it's graduate school application season!
You might think I've been bragging for the last couple of paragraphs. And I'll admit it here: I used to believe that I had it all figured out.
That's right: used to believe. All of that changed one day when a former student came up to me and said, "I've discovered a GRE test trap that you've never even heard about."
And she was right.
Perfectionism: Your Ultimate GRE Study Enemy
Needless to say, when she revealed what she had discovered, I was stunned.
I couldn't believe that I had passed up this vital point in my GRE study guide and during my lectures. And I was shocked that no one had called me out on it before this intuitive GRE test preparation student.
It completely changed the way I wanted to make my students look at GRE study. So when my pupils walked into the classroom the next day and eagerly awaited my lecture, I started out with this surprise announcement:
"Sometimes the desire to succeed leads to the result of failure."
I'm telling you, you could hear a miniscule pin drop in that room. I had thirty blank faces starting back at me, all eager to clear up this new thought. How could the desire to succeed be a bad thing? How could the ambition to do your very best actually lead you down the path to complete failure?
But as I explained my point further, you could see thirty light bulbs switching on across the classroom. They immediately understood what I meant...

Don't Be a GRE Study Control Freak
The desire to succeed can often cloud even our best intentions. That's why when you approach your GRE study, it's important to remember that there's a need to do well...
...And then there's an obsessive desire to perfectly perform that it hinders your progress in other exam subjects. A stubborn attitude has it's time and place, but when it comes to the GRE test, it can definitely lead you down the path to failure because:
*Studies have shown that a stubborn perfectionist streak actually reduces the number of questions you're able to answer on the GRE test - and that ultimately lowers your score;
*And you run the risk of thinking so much about a test question that you cloud your GRE test intuition, which is often correct in the first place.
The bottom line is this: get rid of that stubborn perfectionist streak and you're in prime position to achieve your highest score possible.
