A Guide To The National Lottery

The National Lottery began amidst a whirlwind of hype and excitement in the UK back in 1994

. It seemed as though the whole nation individually bought a ticket and believed that they would be the ones to be the first lottery millionaires.

The buzz surrounding the launch was huge, and drew massive media coverage.

The National Lottery is the largest lottery in Britain, and is a part of the Camelot Group, the body which was granted the license to run it and maintain it first in 1994, and again in 2001 and 2007.

Camelot launched a re-branding campaign in 2002, because sales of tickets had gradually dropped off. The game was re-named Lotto to correspond with its counterparts in some European countries, and advertising campaigns featured comedian Billy Connolly. The name Lotto was never really properly embraced by the public though, and both the official Lotto website, and the public, refer to the game as The National Lottery.

The game was run for almost three years once a week, on a Saturday night, but on Wednesday 5 February 1997, Camelot launched the midweek draw.

The game works by drawing six numbers randomly, from a set of balls numbered from 1-49, as well as a bonus ball. To win, a player must match these six balls to the numbers on their ticket. A player can choose their numbers themselves, or else have them conjured up at random by a lottery vending machine in what is termed a 'lucky dip' ticket.

The statistical chance of someone matching all six numbers in the National Lottery with one single lottery line is 1 in 13,983,816. Anyone who matches all of the six numbers wins a share in the jackpot, and obviously this amount varies greatly depending on the amount of other people who have also matched six numbers, as well as if no one has won previous weeks' jackpots. Generally, more tickets are sold if the draw is a 'rollover' like this, as the extra millions are infinitely tempting to people hoping that they will have a lucky night.

Matching the bonus ball with any of your selected numbers is only important if you can match five of the other numbers drawn. If you match five numbers and the bonus ball, your prize is higher than someone's who has matched just five numbers, but can change week to week depending on how many other prizes have been won in the same week.
