A Hart Stopping Performance!
Joe Hart has grabbed the headlines, after putting in a sensational performance for Man City
, in their opening game against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
Hart was under a great deal of pressure today, after Roberto Mancini controversially named him as the club's No.1 goalkeeper, ahead of Shay Given. The 23-year-old more than justified his manager's decision, by making a series of world-class saves that helped to keep Man City from going behind to Spurs. Hart denied Jermaine Defoe, Tom Huddlestone and Benoit Assou-Ekotto early in the first half and managed not only to impress the Man City fans but also the Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.
Redknapp said "He was in great form, they've got two good keepers and the young kid had a great day today."
Spurs dominated the first half of today's Premier League opener, which was thoroughly entertaining in spite of neither side being able to break the deadlock. Hart was called into action on numerous occasions during the first half and Redknapp's men looked sure to find the back of the net. Man City managed to get through to half-time without conceding, owing largely to the awareness of Hart and were afforded a generous opportunity to re-group.
Mancini's words in the changing room at half time had the desired effect and Man City started the second half in spritely fashion, with Shaun Wright-Phillips going close early doors.
As Tottenham started to tire, it began to look all the more likely that Man City would open their goal-scoring account for the 2010-11 season and Redknapp clearly sensed the danger. In a bold tactical move, the Spurs boss subbed off both his starting strikers in the 68th minute and replaced them with returning front-man Robbie Keane and Roman Pavlyuchenko. By the time the ninety-minutes had elapsed, neither side managed to strike the killer blow and the game ended goalless.
In his post-match interview, Joe Hart said "All I've wanted to do is play for Man City and right now I'm playing." He also paid tribute to Shay given in saying "he's a great goalkeeper and I've got to keep on my toes."
Harry Redknapp was also happy in his post-match interview and was full of positive words for his team's prospects this season. He said "I couldn't have asked for more, we were fantastic. When you have to play silly midweek friendlies it tires you out. I think they ran out of a bit of steam but overall I thought it was a great performance from us, we were fantastic but we just couldn't get the two extra points. But if we play like this all season we will be right up there."
Man City signed Hart in May 2006 for an initial fee of 600,000 pounds and it seems that investment is now starting to pay dividends.
Hart has been out on loan to Tranmere Rovers, Blackpool and Birmingham but he has finally established himself as Man City's No.1 goalkeeper.
Hart began to come into his own last season during a loan spell at Birmingham, during which he put in enough top-class performances to be nominated for the 2010 PFA Young Player of the Year award along with Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas and James Milner (who eventually went on to win the award). Hart was also voted Birmingham City's Player of the Year for 2009-10.
It is all starting to happen for Joe Hart now, who, in the space of a week has become first choice goalkeeper for both Man City and England. The young star has certainly become a talking point, with many football enthusiasts saying that things may have gone better at the World Cup in South Africa, if Joe Hart had been Capello's first-choice keeper.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and there is nothing to say that Hart would not have made the same mistakes that Robert Green made, but Hart's performance today has certainly raised yet more questions over Capello's ability to manage the national side. One can only hope that Hart keeps up this sensational form for both his club and country.
He is a bright young English talent and at a time when the future of English football is being called into serious doubt, Joe Hart is a beacon of light for young and aspiring English talent.
