It is said that this old city was founded by Hercules but according to scientists, the Phoenicians were mentioned with their settlement around 1100 BC. The Phoenicians were followed by the Moors, the Romans and the Carthaginians. Around the 18th century, this old city was one of the most important ones in Spain, being a great economical centre. The architectural part of the city also improved during this period and there are some buildings that date back for centuries. Besides the fact that it is one of the oldest places in Europe and in the world, Cadiz is close to the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean. You can get here by train; it is the simplest way possible and it is also very cheap.

The old town and the port

The Nueva Cathedral dominates the centre of the old town. Its construction began in 1722 but it was finished only in 1853; its building style is mostly Baroque and in its crypts you will find the tomb of Manuel de la Fall, a famous Spanish composer. Paintings of Rubens, Murillo and Zurbaran wait for you in the Cadiz Museum; containing three floors of great artefacts, the museum is hosted by Plaza de la Mina. The other historical museum that is preferred by the tourists is Museo de las Corte de Cadiz with another historical period, this museum is also interesting and worth visiting.

Sunbath in Cadiz

When you travel in Cadiz, there are many things that you can do. One of the most relaxing ones is a sunbath, as the sun shines lovely in this part of Spain. The most popular beach in Cadiz is Playa de la Caleta and you can admire it in the old town. As it is very famous, it is also very crowded, especially in the summer. If you want to enjoy your holiday in a more peaceful place, go and take a bath on Playa de le Victoria. No matter what you choose, one thing is sure: the night activities are very popular in the pubs and cafes around the place, so take a tour of them.

The merry month in Cadiz is February

One of the most popular carnivals in Spain is the one that takes place in Cadiz: in February, the whole place is in a party mood. There are specific costumes, foods and drinks that are prepared for this event and the tourists come from all over the world. Taking this into consideration, it is better to plan your Spanish holiday in February as the fun is guaranteed.
