A Kid, A Panic Attack, And A Worried Parent
It can get troublesome when we have a kid, panic attack
, and ourselves as parents in the mix. Being worried about it is a normal response any parent would have. There are a few things to note about panic attacks and to understand about children however.
Panic attacks are not entirely uncommon in kids at some point or another. This is often overlooked as we may have a tendency to relate the attacks with adults. Millions are affected and it includes children, teenagers, adults, and elders alike. No one is spared, unfortunately.
The cause of panic attacks when we think about children, can come from seemingly silly sources. There may be a monster under the bed, or in the closet. The darkness at night can seem ominous and full of unknown horrors. The list can go on and on, but it is important to know that the experience for them is real.
They may really believe that a monster is under the bed, and it is absolutely real to them. This is an important point to take into consideration, rather than just scolding them and saying that there is none. When talking to them about it, talk from their perspective and with understanding. Even us as adults that suffer from panic attacks, can worry about many things that would seem silly to others, although to us it is real. Now, the bad news or good news first?
Let us start with the bad. While this phase may pass for most children safely, there are some that suffer from these attacks for long and consistent periods of time. This can potentially lead to a long lasting panic disorder, although it is a treatable condition.
The good news is that the attacks generally does not cause harm, and a regular checkup for the child can be done to clear the mind of any other potential health issues. Symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks can often be mistaken for other things, so this precaution can help ease some of our worries.
