A Little Known No Fail Way Of Catching Big Pike.
So armed with a plastic shopping bag filled with old fishing tackle some "bait" bought
at the local angling shop, various coloured spinners, and an assortment of hooks, ground bait. and some maggots we "took off" looking for some water.

At first we like most did not know what we were doing. Casting into trees across the other bank, hooking into my partner's hat and any number of completely "unsussed" happenings seemed like par for the course. Slowly but surely we began to master the "art" of fishing. After three seasons of getting "up to speed", with the various legalities and clothing required to have a comfortable fish, we started catching.
Now before attempting to catch big pike you need to have all the right gear. Otherwise when you do hook into a big one trouble can hit you big time. Without long forceps, alloy lined gloves, very large high quality landing net and other vital pieces of "landing equipment", our pike and you can come unstuck with dire consequences.
So we now have everything in place. Now this is how you can catch big pike. First, all you need is the right piking rod. Double treble hooks, wire trace and depending on how far out you need to cast a two ounce pater noster rig. The best days to "hunt", is on a grey overcast very cold morning with the wind coming at you so you are casting in the teeth of the wind. Hence the right clothing is vital for a comfortable fishing session.
For the bait all you need is a frozen sprat bought from any supermarket. I used to buy about 2.00 worth of sprats which could last several sessions. No need for buying those different coloured sprats from the local angling shop costing 5.00 for four sprats. Note when you freeze your sprats make sure you wrap them individually as they will be difficult to separate when you are on the bank in the teeth of a gale force wind.
Next, set your pat noster rig and leave about 2 feet from your hook to put your weight. As I write this I know that it would be a lot easier for if have a picture of the rig, but its really a standard pater noster rig set up.. you will then have your double blood knot securing your wire trace.
Now for the killer technique. Take the end treble from your double treble and hook into the frozen sprat, near the head, then (this is important), turn the wires trace 360 degrees so that the wire has wrapped around the fish then fix the second treble to the back of the fish. This secures the hooks very well indeed so you can cast your fish as far as you want without fear of losing the fish.
The beauty of using frozen sprats is two fold. Firstly it help you secure the hooks without ruining your fish or have your fish fall apart. Secondly as the fish is frozen and sinks to the bottom it takes the frozen fish about 15 minutes to start to defrost. As the fish defrosts oils form the sprat will attract big pike. And because the pike will not see this fish swimming around that part of the swim, it will think that it is a newly deceased fish.
This is why you get big pike because big pike do not want to work hard for their dinner and a newly deceased fish, (a defrosting sprat releasing oils), will tick all the lazy dinner catch boxes for big pike.
If you need to see a youtube video of this technique I will put one up soon.
