A Look At James Bond Movies Throughout The Years

James Bond movies have been around since the 60s

. In this day and age, film and movie buffs may likely raise a brow on espionage but 4 decades ago, spies were deemed elusive and intriguing figures! Before the 60s though, spies were mainly villains lurking in shadows or being annihilated by assassins. The James Bond character however made sure to change that.

The Magical 60's

Those born after the 60s may never realize how far the espionage genre has gone. The cold war was at its height. The decade initiated the first of the popular James Bond movies produced in Britain. The very successful series encouraged the development of other exaggerated and more out-of-this-world secret agent adventure dramas. The typical Bond film elements were evident: the suave agent 007, advanced gadgetry, exotic locations, tongue-in-cheek humor, awesome theme music, sexy ladies, and the continuous battle against powerful, evil and impossibly rich villains.

The 70's Thrill

Around this time, the series developed towards lighter action thrillers. Albert Broccoli once stated that they created Live And Let Die with the focus on chase scenes. They felt this would mellow the audience's doubts on Roger Moore since everyone still thought of Sean Connery as the single true Bond. Of course, this was not to say Moore did not perform well. Broccoli simply did not want to repeat what happened with George Lazenby when they produced On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

The Stylish 80's

Along with the gadgetry, the action scenes greatly improved. These times, however, were not the most profitable for the Bond franchise. On the other hand, Timothy Dalton's style stayed true to the Bond character. For instance, License To Kill begins with a chase scene that initiates with Timothy Dalton being hoisted down a helicopter in a tuxedo. Certainly, as a continuously stylish spy, James Bond's wardrobe must mirror the latest trends to attract a new generation of spectators. The "new Bond" now had daily apparel that gradually became more practical and casual throughout the decade. Although, it was a sporty-casual look that did retain classic pieces for that Bond element.

The 90's Revival

The 90's provided new challenging events to the Bond series. Due to the infamous MGM/Turner fiasco, James Bond suddenly vanished from the theaters for 6 years. Despite the debacle, with the release of Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997, EON appears to have once again raised the stakes. And then there's Never Say Never Again, which was distinctively the most American Bond of all. This marked the Bond series' ability to change, enabling the films to remain ahead of their competitors. Previous Bonds were serious, while Americanized Bonds were satirical, humorous and light.

In This Decade

Agent 007 was now portrayed as a more youthful, albeit colder Bond, with actor Daniel Craig. Screenwriter Paul Haggis stated that Bond would be renewed as a younger spy with no gadgets. The newer James Bond movies have arguably taken on a more realistic approach. Still, many consider the new Bond, particularly Daniel Craig, as one of the truest Bond characters since Sean Connery. It shows that James Bond has survived decades of changes and is still highly admired to this date, with respects to the original James Bond.
