A Look Into Data Migration
Upgrading from an old PC to a newer is a way of life in the digital universe
. It is a never ending cycle of upgrades and level ups in terms of speed and power. Techies spend lots of cash future-proofing their machines making them ready for the newer and better upgrades to come. One notable problem that every user face when upgrading is data migration. In the old days, I keep my data on floppy drives which holds about 1mb and is rendered practically useless after a month or so. So it was actually safer to keep your data in 20mb hard drives rather than leaving it in a floppy where data can be erased by simply getting near a magnetic field or exposing it in direct sunlight. When optical compact discs arrived, it paved the way for a more robust data storage system that is more resistant to elements and if properly stored, can keep data for years. Nowadays, it has become a standard to store data on CDs because of their durability. When upgrading to a newer PC, one simply has to pop the CD in the new PC and copy the data off it.
This has been the common practice but several companies have already improved this practice to shorten the migration process and lessen the amount of downtime especially with those PCs that run businesses. These products come in both hardware and software forms. There are Hard Drive Recovery programs that can clone an old hard drive and seamlessly transfer the contents to a new PC, there is a program that can temporarily store the contents to an online storage system and leave a backup for future use and for the hardware part, there are one touch Data Migration cables that copies the contents from one PC to another using either USB or UTP cables automatically. Lastly, there are the more popular external hard drive systems that feature automatic backups and one touch data migration embedded in them. These are the most common and widely used systems to migrate data simply because of their one touch function, meaning a user does not need extensive experience when performing data migration.
Whatever method a user chooses to use in Data Migration, it is important to know that the easiest method is not always the safest. The old fashioned drag and drop method is always the tried and tested fool proof way of getting data CDROM one storage to another.
