A Magic Shampoo to regrow hair?

A "magic shampoo" to regrow hair? Sounds too good to be true. Unfortunately, there is no magic shampoo. Worldwide, consumers spent $38 billion (that's with a "b") on hair care products last year. We are willing to spend big bucks to get that glorious mane of hair for products that vary from shampoos, conditioners and hair spray to mousse, gels and serums all promising to make your hair look like the advertized model on the runway. Some even promise to thicken your hair, and grow hair in bald areas. Is that possible? As a nurse in the medical field dealing with hair loss, I hear from patients on a daily basis searching for that magic bullet that will give them instant results. In dealing with hair loss there is no instant cure.

Let's start at the beginning, the follicle. You are born with all the hair follicles you'll ever have. Though most babies are born bald, or with little hair, those follicles are present, just immature, and won't begin to grow hair for months. Think of the hair follicle as the seed where it all begins. The follicle is planted deep into the dermis of your skin and is attached to a blood supply where it receives nutrients. This is the root system. Your hair is only as healthy as its follicle and vascular supply. A tree can only survive if it has a strong root system. Let's apply the same analogy to your hair. Hair is simply the protein growth from the follicle. No shampoo is going to affect the follicle.

The purpose of shampoo is simply to cleanse hair and scalp. It is important to use a shampoo that is appropriate for your hair type and conditions it with nutrients without stripping the natural moisture. Hair care products treat your existing hair only, they will not make hair grow where there is none. Nor do hair care products make your hair thicker. Products applied to your hair will give it the appearance of increased thickness by coating the hair with substances to make the hair appear more dense as well as thicker. There are several good hair products, such as Nioxin and Remaxx that aid with hair loss by providing the hair and scalp with moisturizing proteins and collagens and also remove sebum buildup on the scalp.

Rogaine (brand name of Minoxidil), the only topical FDA approved product to regrow hair, "reinvigorates shrunken hair follicles" and works by scalp absorption that increases blood supply to the scalp. This is very beneficial since it brings necessary nutrients via the blood supply to the follicle. Basically when you enrich the follicle (hair source), you are feeding the hair. Shampoo only cleanses the hair and scalp.
