You don't have to rich to go to Africa. There are cheap flights and there are wonderful things to do on a budget once you arrive. Depending on which countries you go to and which parts of those countries, you will have the opportunity to explore great natural and cultural diversity. Fabulous beaches, magnificent national parks with exotic wild animals, world-class wine estates, large cosmopolitan cities, small rustic villages and much, much more await.

Cheap air fare is great because when you arrive at your first destination your budget will have room in it for some little extras. Maybe you'll stay an extra night at a particularly pleasant hotel. Or maybe you'll make a little side trip you hadn't planned on.

African airports like airports everywhere require passengers to go through security before boarding a plane. It's a good idea to check with whatever airline you will be flying to find out if they have any particular restrictions. Generally if you have been through one security gate you know what to expect at most others.

By now most people know the rules about fire arms, explosives, fire works, toxins and sharp things. The big mistake normal people make is with liquids and gels. Thousands of dollars (pounds, euros, rand etc) worth of shampoo, conditioner, mousse, gel, mascara, shaving cream and so on have been confiscated and disposed of because they were not properly packed. If you are traveling on a budget you don't want to waste money replacing all your cosmetics.

The simple formula is that all of liquids, oils and gels must be in bottles or jars or other containers no larger than one hundred ml or 3.4 ounces. This is not difficult. Most drug stores sell little containers. You can also buy travel size versions of many products.

Now here's the tricky part. All of the containers have to fit into one transparent plastic zip lock bag. The resealable plastic bag can be no larger than one liter. That's a little bit bigger than a quart. In the U. S. Quart size bags are required. If you have your stuff in a quart bag you will easily meet the limits anywhere else.

However suppose you have a giant economy size bottle of your favorite shampoo because you can't live with out it so you have to have enough for the whole trip. The solution is to put some shampoo in a little bottle and put the giant bottle in your checked luggage. You aren't going to be using it while you are on the plane anyway. Unlike explosives, corrosives and all things radioactive, shampoo is permitted in the checked luggage.
