. Because with dedicated server rental you are also renting the hardware, you can save money by opting for colocation. Colocation means you pay for the hardware up front, but long term you save by just renting rackspace and bandwidth. So what different colo packages can you take up? We will look at the biggest packages, through to the smallest.

If you wanted the most expensive colocation package, you'd fit out an entire datacentre. With this, you would need a highly sophisticated team to manage power, bandwidth and cooling requirements- not forgetting security. Most businesses will rule this out due to the sheer cost and practicality. A datacentre can have thousands of racks over multiple floors, to half a dozen racks in a purpose fitted comms room.

If a datacentre doesn't fit your budget, you can always consider a private cage or suite. A cage or suite is a private enclosure in a datacentre where you host your own racks. The benefit of this is you are separated from other customer's racks.

If a lockable cage or suite is a bit over the top, then you can look at renting your own racks. Normally a rack will be around 40U of space, and you will have up to 16 amps of power. Typically, within these confinements you would be able to host around 30 servers. Because of the green lobby concern for the environment and the every increasing cost of power, servers are becoming more and more power efficient. All racks can be locked front and back for peace of mind.

If you are looking at only a few servers, then a full rack might be practical and you might consider a quarter or half lockable racks. These offer considerable price savings over a full rack, while still offering the security a full rack offers. Sometimes you may find quarter and half lockable racks shared the same power feeds as other lockable rack customers. For peace of mind, it is always worth having your own power feed.

If you only have a couple of servers, then quarter and half lockable racks again may be overkill. Don't worry though, there is a simple colo package for you. There are companies that offer shared rackspace for individual servers. Sold by the U, you can house anywhere from 1U through to a 4U server. Most reputable colocation providers will only allowed supervised access to shared racks- but do be sure to check this out before signing up with a colocation provider. Do consider that if you are in a shared rack, you are sharing power and bandwidth with other customers.

The many different packages you have to choose from, make colo a very viable option. Whatever you need to host, you should find the right colocation package.
