A Packing Managers Job

Packing managers oversee packing lines are responsible for ensuring goods are ready for storage or dispatch as efficiently as possible.


Their usual tasks and activities include:

supervising packing workers.

making sure there enough supplies of good and packing materials


devising rotas and schedules.

arranging maintenance for packing machines and equipment.

ensuring health and safety standards are observed.

ensuring quality standards are met.

Dealing staff with issues (hiring, training, firing, etc).

liaising with customers.

handling problems, i.e. machine failure, accidents, etc.

Packing managers usually work in offices, but but can be required to work in production or warehouse areas when needed. Their working environment can be either noisy and dirty, or clean or air conditioned.

Protective clothing and footwear will be worn as necessary for all factory and warehouse work. Hygiene restriction and guidelines apply for those working in food packing areas, with the wearing of masks, gloves, hats, hair nets, boots, etc, being compulsory.

Packing managers can expect to earn around 15000 to start, with opportunities to earn more via promotion and development.

A wide range of businesses and companies employ packing managers, from to warehouses and distribution firms, retailers, mail order firms, transport, haulage and freight companies, etc, etc.

There are various ways into packing management, either via promotion from packing line supervisory work or direct recruitment from elsewhere.

Opportunities for training are in-house and provided by senior colleagues, or off site at colleges or with external training providers. Areas for study include health and safety, hygiene, logistics, distribution, etc.

Other general management qualifications can obtained by packing managers, who can ultimately aim to achieve high level industry qualifications such as The Packaging Society Certificate in Packaging or packing technology diplomas.

Packing managers are required to take part in Continuing Professional Development in order to ensure their knowledge and skills are updated on a regular basis with all new developments.

Packing management vacancies are advertised directly by employers, or in local and regional newspapers, relevant websites, and also by Job Centre Plus and various specialist recruitment agencies.
