A Quick Glance At The Different Types Of Virtualization
Meeting evolving business environments with effective strategies that leverage existing resources
, virtualization has been around for many years in some form or other. With many benefits like hardware cost savings, isolation and footprint reduction etc, there are many that re considering the adoption of virtualization technologies in their applications. The virtualization technology provides an avenue to continue the life of legacy systems on the latest hardware and consolidates the systems on fewer physical computers.
Todays IT intensive enterprise is on the lookout for the latest technologies that allow businesses to run with fewer resources while providing the infrastructure to meet today and future customer needs. There are three main types of virtualization, all of which carry out important tasks in businesses
Hardware Virtualization
Also referred to as hardware-assisted virtualization, hardware virtualization is most commonly used in IT departments as well as data centers. Essentially, hardware assisted virtualization means that processors which support it will be more optimized for managing virtual environments, but only if you run a virtualization software which supports such a hardware assistance. The servers hardware is virtualized thus allowing us to be able to run different OS and different applications simultaneously on the same hardware. The aim of hardware virtualization is to develop hardware that supports external virtualization software rather than to enable virtualization directly from the hardware itself.
Desktop Virtualization
Although it doesnt have a direct influence on data center consolidation itself, desktop virtualization can be an added incentive in terms of the overall costs of the IT infrastructure. It requires working across a lot of different organizations within the company and it impacts the end users a lot more during the stages of putting the plan in place and executing it. Conceptually, with desktop virtualization applications and services are provisioned, managed and deployed on the server before being delivered to the desktop. This results in a lot of savings on costs and drives efficiencies in a number of ways.
Storage Virtualization
This is where the resources of many different network storage devices such as hard drives are pooled so that it looks like they are all one big vat of storage. This is then managed by a central system that makes it all look much simpler to the network administrators. This is also a great way to keep an eye on resources in a business, as you can then see exactly how much you have left at a given time. It gives the administrator much less hassle when it comes to backups etc.
The growing awareness of the advantages provided by virtualization technology is brought about by economic factors of scarce resources, government regulation, and more competition. Being used by a growing number of organizations, virtualization provides high availability for critical applications, and streamlines application deployment and migrations. Virtualization appliance can simplify IT operations and allow IT organizations to respond faster to changing business demands.
