A Review Of The Canon I-sensys Lbp3100 Laser Printer

The top opens forwards to make the output tray for the printer

. The front of the Canon I-SENSYS LBP3100 folds down to become a 150 sheet feed tray which includes a hinged cover behind the front panel which folds out to cover and keep dust off the paper. I like what they have done with the dust cover as it will always remain safe. A single page slot is located just above the dust cover which can be used for a variety of purposes.

There are few controls on the Canon I-SENSYS LBP3100 with a single green LED for power and data set to the left of the top cover as well as a resume button. Connection to a computer is via a sole USB socket at the rear.

Setting up the Canon I-SENSYS LBP3100 is straightforward as virtually all you have to do as far as software is concerned is install the supplied driver. The only consumable for the machine is the printer cartridge which is inserted via the top hatch. You get a 700 page starter toner cartridge with the machine but the replacement 1870B002AA will do as much as 1,500 pages and can be got as genuine Canon or non-Canon varieties.

Canon claims the LBP3100 is capable of printing at 16 pages per minute (ppm) which proved to be not far off the mark as in tests a 20 page text print was completed in 15.2ppm while a 15 x 10cm photo was printed in 15 seconds. These are very good speeds for a printer of this price.

The Canon I-SENSYS LBP3100 was, for the most part, capable of making high quality prints. Text was dense and showed no signs of spatter while grayscale was fair with some signs of banding and levelling out of different tones.

The photo print, using Canon's recommended settings, showed some obvious dot patterns although the level of detail was reasonable. Of course this is a black and white printer and was not designed with photo printing in mind.

Canon quotes a noise level of 50dBA for the Canon I-SENSYS LBP3100 but in tests it peaked at 63dBA which is quite loud for printer which you may have sitting on a desk close to you.

For about 90 the Canon I-SENSYS LBP3100 is definitely worth considering with fast, high quality, text prints while grayscale and photos, although not great, were still acceptable.
