A Simple Step By Step Guide to Affiliate Marketing

A Simple Step By Step Guide to Affiliate Marketing

If you've never heard of affiliate marketing, or you have, but you're not sure how it works, then read on! In this article, we'll look at what affiliate marketing is, how you can get involved, and what you can earn.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

The simplest way to explain affiliate marketing is as follows: there are companies and people out there who offer products and services that they want marketed. Instead of hiring an online marketing or sales force to sell their product for them, they offer members of the public the opportunity to market their product online, in return for a commission on sales. That way, they gain extra exposure without extra cost, and you, the marketer, stand to make a good living selling someone else's product.

How to Become an Affiliate

Becoming an affiliate is relatively easy except that you have to find the right niche first! There are plenty of popular niches, from travel to dogs, to weight loss and health related products and services. You could even opt to promote products from more than one niche, or market real world' items like credit cards, home loans or airline tickets. Once you've decided on a niche, here's what you do:

Open your internet browser, and search for the term, product or service you've decided to market, plus the words affiliate program.' For instance, you might type health insurance affiliate program' or weight loss affiliate program.'

Consider your existing blogs or sites, and what they're about. If you can tie your affiliate programs in with your existing medium to high traffic site or blog, go for it!

Now look at the programs that are on offer. What minimum requirements are there in terms of site traffic? What do the products cost? What is the commission? Will it be easy or hard to sell the item in question?

Narrow your search for affiliate programs to a few choices, and then look for those that give you not only a unique affiliate link, but also a tracking cookie that allows for payments for months or years after someone first uses your link.

Sign up for the programs of your choice, and start promoting their products, either through your blog or site, or through social networks, PPC campaigns, article marketing or forum posting.

How Much Can You Earn?

Earnings can be slow to build when you first start as an affiliate, but you can earn hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars if you find the right niche, and the right product or service, and you are a good marketer!
