Accountability seems to be an ugly word today. People do not want to be held accountable when they know their work is sloppy. If both you and I are mediocre in our performance, then that is just fine because no one stands out, but when I perform with mediocrity and you perform with excellence, that makes both of us stand out, one for good and one for bad. It also puts pressure on me to work harder. The "excellent" pay attention to all their tasks and do everything in an effectual manner, thoughtfully, and competently.
Unfortunately, mediocrity seems to be the standard for today's time, yet everyone wants a great employee evaluation, honorable recognition and great words of respect spoken of them. Regardless of whether others are watching or not, we need to always perform our best in everything we do, whether it is washing the dishes, cleaning the house, making the bed, taking out the trash, sweeping the floor, or entertaining a guest. Whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability. When you feed the hungry, but have not fed your own children, you are not walking in a spirit of excellence. When you teach children in school, but do not teach your own children the basics of life, you are not walking in a spirit of excellence. When your appearance is flawless, but your own children are unkempt, you are not walking in a spirit of excellence. One who has a spirit of excellence does everything to the best of their ability whether others are watching or not.
Those who are promoted in this world are those with a track record of achievement. Those who are honored as great individuals were already great before they were noticed. You don't become great after you get recognition. You get recognition because you are already a great person doing great things. Great people do everything in a spirit of excellence and that is why they are honored.
One of the great secrets of being great and working in excellence is follow-through. Many people start things and don't finish any of them. Their subconscious mind gets into the habit of not allowing them to complete anything and they always flow in a spirit of incompleteness and failure. If you start something, make sure you complete it. Even if the heavens fall, complete what you start! This is working in a spirit of excellence. Accomplishment of whatever kind is the crown of effort, the diadem of thought. You cannot pursue a worthy goal steadily and persistently, with all the powers of your mind, and yet fail. The smallest task well done becomes a miracle of achievement!
