A System For Salon Success
Ready to take the next step and grow your salon? Start by organizing every component of the business into departments and create systems that ensure consistency and quality across the board.
1. Establish strong leadership. Be a good leader by practicing what you preach. Do precise, technical, creative work. Offer excellent customer service. Chances are, you have to keep an eye on your business while also working as a stylist. Don't let your duties as a stylist overwhelm your ability to lead your team; put systems in place to free you of any technical work you can delegate, and focus on doing great work and setting an example for your employees to follow.
2. Market yourself. You could be the best hairdresser in the country, but if you don't market yourself, no one will know. Show people what you do and how well you do it. Don't be shy. Whether you use email, web, newsletters, ads, or PR, emphasize the benefits of coming to your salon. And do things to stand out - find ways to differentiate yourself so potential clients will think of you next time they're looking for a new stylist - or a new look. And marketing isn't just about getting the word out about your business. It's about developing quality relationships and building loyalty with your existing client base as well. Pay attention to every detail: dcor, phone manners, the way your employees communicate with clients.
3. Know your budget. Control your finances with a strictly defined budget. It's the only way to find out if too much money is being spent in one area. It's also a good starting point for figuring out if it makes sense to expand - and seeing if your business can handle the extra expense.
4. Manage your employees effectively and keep your business running smoothly. If you don't have management systems in place, people won't know what's expected of them. Employees may feel it is time for a raise when it's actually not warranted, or worse, a top performer may go unrecognized. Management systems are an important part of employee retention and an opportunity to get rid of underperformers or troublemakers.
5. Establish a sales system. How does your staff convert one-time sales into repeat and referral business? You need a systematic approach to getting customers to come back to your salon and purchase other services and products, and to have them tell their friends about you.
6. Determine a specific approach to customer service. Put systems in place to a) find out if customers are satisfied, and b) handle complaints quickly and effectively without leaving anything to chance. Educate your clients by showing them tools and products to use, so they're less dependent on you and can get great results at home.
