A Temporary Dog

If you have children, chances are you've been asked, no begged, for a dog at one point or another. Your kids may not understand that the adorable little puppy with the "please take me home" eyes is a huge commitment, but you do. Would they look after it or would that task fall to you as soon as the novelty wore off? Will a dog fit into your lifestyle? Do the kids even realize what the dog waste bags are for?

Unfortunately, may families don't know those answers until it's too late. They bring home that squirming bundle of fur only to realize within a couple of weeks that it just doesn't work for them. Back goes the puppy or dog to the soundtrack of your kid's laments and tears.

Not an ideal situation for any of you, human or canine.

Have you every thought about renting a dog? It isn't as crazy as it first sounds and may be more widely available than you realize. Many shelters offer fostering programs which enable you to bring a dog into your home on a temporary basis which acts as a kind of "trial run" for you and your family without having to commit to pet ownership. It gets someone's potential pet out of the often chaotic shelter environment, even if just for a while, and it lets you know whether or not a dog is right for your family.

Basically, it's a win win situation and an excellent alternative to making what should be a long term decision that you may regret.

There are many factors to consider when committing to a dog or any pet for that matter. Do you have the time? Can you afford the regular associated costs? Do pet waste bags or the mere thought of an "accident" on your new floors make you shudder? Maybe a dog isn't right for you, but then again, when that warm wet nose nudges you on the couch, perhaps a dog is exactly what you want.

Luckily for you, if you do some digging around, you'll find that you can take a test drive before you say yes to a new addition to your family.
