A demolishing Barcelona exposes Real Madrid's deficiencies
The Camp Nou stadium witnessed a lesson of football at its highest expression and surrendered to the feet of their players, for the disgrace of Real Madrid fans.
When you defy the laws of physics you have two options: accept your impotence to go against them or learn the hard way. And when the law that you are trying to defy is gravity and you are not willing to accept your limitations, a heavy fall will be awaiting for you to teach you a lesson. This is the explanation about Real Madrid's resounding defeat in "El Clasico" from Spain against Barcelona for 5-0. A team that was flying high in all three competitions in dispute -Copa del Rey, Liga and Champions League- where they had not known what a defeat was, until Barcelona taught them a simple rule in Planet Earth: everything that goes up, must eventually come down.
The person responsible of defying gravity was Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho, who was comfortably sitting on a cloud bragging about his success and how he had frustrated Barcelona as former Chelsea and Inter coach. Then the Portuguese sticker Cristiano Ronaldo followed his countryman's steps, and said that Barcelona could never score 8 goals against -which they didn't, but they came really close to- them, spicing things even more before the Monday's game.
With their feet on the ground, Barcelona head coach Joseph Guardiola and his players played deaf ears and waited to give a response on the pitch. They avoided all provocations and just focused on being truthful to their style, that one that the legendary Johan Cruyff -former Barcelona coach and player- implemented in 1989 with the beginning of his dream team, a squad that didn't just focus in winning by all means, but winning with a gorgeous game, where the ball did most of the running instead of the players.
The last four games against Barcelona had been nothing but a nightmare for Real Madrid, and the fifth one was not going to be an exception. The first 18 minutes of the first half where sufficient for Barcelona to decide the game, thanks to the goals from Xavi after assistance from Iniesta, and Pedro who received the courtesy from Villa. Mourinho pictured what was waiting for them in the second half, and decided to sacrifice his playmaker Ozil for a defensive midfielder: Lass. But the story was already written and there was nothing he could do about it.
With a Real Madrid already resigned, Barcelona didn't have to worry about defending -as a fact the white team only reached Valdez goal once in the last 45 minutes- and continued with their demolishing attacks, which led into Villa's third and fourth goal. With the result in their pocket, Guardiola did three substitutions: Bojan, Keita and Jeffren for Villa, Xavi and Pedro, which were unnoticed, as Barcelona continued creating goal options and controlling the game at their pleasure. Bojan even had two chances to score, but it was Jeffren who scored the fifth and final goal of the match.
With their eternal rival humiliated and the first place of the Liga BBVA taken away from them -Barcelona is the new and solo leader with 34 points, two more than Real Madrid- there was nothing else for the red and blue team to do, but to wait for the final whistle. Unfortunately for the show, Real Madrid's defender Ramos lost his head and violently kicked Messi from behind, generating the disapproval from his rivals, and that led to his red card. Still impotent with the situation, Ramos had one more sample of his lack of sportsmanship, and he pushed Puyol in the face, which made the captain fall to the ground, followed my another push in Xavi's face before finally leaving the pitch.
It was a sad behavior from Ramos, but it clearly exemplified the feeling of impotence and frustration from all Real Madrid players and fans, that couldn't digest what was going on. Barcelona taught them a lesson about humbleness, and the so awaited response to Mourinho's and Ronaldo's provocations was translated into goals.
