A frustrating Argument about Cost versus Value relating to OSH NZ

In the 32 years that I have been on the front lines in safety and health essentially the most annoying thing people can say to me now is that it is too expensive!! (it's even got a title - The Cost of Compliance').

If I was to start on the operation of creating a plastic injection moulding company, it would not be the business itself that could cost too much, it would be the mistakes I would certainly make on the way. Why? - because I know nothing about how to build this sort of business. I am totally ignorant of the processes involved.

The same applies to safe practices. For some peculiar reason people with no training in health and safety (and not much inclination to master in my experience) expect you'll find their way through any maze without a map and contemplate why they go missing. I have met countless employers who've made countless false starts, with bits of diverse approaches (and paperwork) splattered all over the interior of their enterprise, but who never appear to achieve circumstances where they could say "yep, that's done and dusted". And i also am really saddened with what isn't achieved along with the money that is thrown away in the process. Each time they struggle to get it moving again they meet more resistance. You've listened to it; "we tried that recently and yes it didn't function!"

And don't rely on the government for much help either. Even though they do create some good materials that's not the situation. Their bottom line is "we'll supply the drinking water - it's your horse,you have to pursuade to drink it!"

What exactly is missing is really a basic understanding of the value that doing health and safety will provide to a business. Not that I expect you to study his works, but a guy named Abraham Mazlow created a useful little idea termed as a Hierarchy of Needs'.

Some tips i take from Abe is always that he thinks that UNLESS we take care of the various needs we now have as humans in roughly the order in which he suggests, we can't develop and stand out at that which you want out of life. This concept has long been utilized by business often times and I take that to mean that if businesses usually do not tackle their health and safety needs (in the broadest sense of these words) then it'll ultimately not achieve its full potential. When the reason people enter into business is to screw the most money out of everything they do then they will not need Mazlow. They will also not be around long. They are going to either die an organic death, strangled by their own lack of understanding and management ability, or perhaps the Government or another person will eliminate them. This could be the life and death of most UNVIABLE Devices.

So, what of worth? or Our worthiness? The significance of safety and health to your enterprise is actually the significance that really engaged, loyal and motivated employees provide for it. Anyone who still believes in slavery simply hasn't learned the lessons of historical past but also hasn't felt the lash! ("the whipping will continue till the screaming stops" - yeah right, that will work!!). You can't get truly involved, loyal, motivated employees willing to produce till they drop in case you don't value their basic individual right not to be damaged by the work you get them to do. Won't work, never has, never will; end of story. Sure you might get a nice boat, a couple of houses and a nice car out of it but eventually it all crumbles, simply because it is not sustainable. As human beings we won't offer our loyalty or put our shoulder to the wheel for individuals who don't respect us in exchange. Understand this right and anything else you want to achieve starts becoming a good deal easier.
