A look back at one of 2010 biggest hitters; the Android powered HTC Desire

Where others have failed HTC have stepped up, the battle for the iPhone beater is on with the new HTC Desire

. The device is packed with some high tech specs which include a 3.7 inch touch sensitive screen and a 1GHz CPU. A digital camera and full multimedia centre have found themselves in there along with GPS and a varied selection of web connection technologies.

The HTC Desire is the perfect mixture of style and sophistication; the screen can produce over 16M colours in a 480 x 800 pixel resolution (WVGA) while the outer casing feels very nice to handle. The on-screen user interface is called HTC Sense and it provides a brilliant user experience with a gorgeous backdrop.

Sense combines the users social networks with there contacts in the phonebook. Links can be made and information can be shared direct from the contacts list. Sites like Facebook and Twitter are compatible, but other sites include Flickr and MySpace. Where business conscious users are concerned HTC have enabled the phone to be compatible with Exchange Mail, but if you are a regular user, accounts from many providers like Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail can also be managed. The screen has a built in accelerometer which allows the UI to follow the phone into landscape mode which opens up access to an on-screen QWERTY keyboard.

The HTC Desire is reliant on access to 3G networks, but for an even faster connection Wi Fi can be picked where possible. For communicating across cellular data networks the Desire also utilises EGDE/GPRS. The browser is compatible with the screen capacitive multi touch technology and saving bookmarks is possible. Undoubtedly one of Google's greatest ventures has been the mobile software field with there Android operating systems going down a treat with companies and consumers.

Access to the Android market is possible as the Desire runs using the Android 2.1 OS; a slick operating system which also allows full access to the Android Market. The Android Market is an online store which stocks thousands of downloadable applications to suite any requirement. Another feature provided by the Google based platform is the YouTube compatibility; the app lets users view and upload content as they please without hindering the phones performance (thanks go to the 1GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon CPU).

Digital cameras are pretty mainstream; however the race for the most mega-pixels seems to have quieted down. HTC have mounted a comfortable 5MP effort which is capable of shooting both stills and videos in a pretty reasonable resolution. The video player is capable of multiple format playback while the music player manages to handle pretty much any audio file you throw at it.

The HTC Desire is one of the more impressive handsets to be released this year; you get great smartphone functionality in all fields of mobile technology. But with more and more phones of high calibre on the horizon its success could be short lived. These bigger and better devices include HTC's very own Desire HD and Desire Z.
